Jails at capacity claim rejected by authorities
The Metropolitan Police have rejected reports the force has agreed to run eight of the 11 jails at capacity due to a lack of capacity.
One in six prisoners is a repeat offender.
The force wants to move some of these inmates to a different jail – one at a new prison site.
"Some of the most serious criminals will be locked up for a longer time," Metropolitan Police Detective Superintendent Peter Badden said.
"There is still a long way to go but it looks like at least 10 of the jails are fully operational at capacity."
Metropolitan Police Commissioner Cressida Dick said many people who are in jail for drug offences would benefit from the extra time they would spend behind bars, but some will be unable to pay fees for the extra months.
She welcomed the prospect that some of the offenders involved would not be able to face court for a longer time due to their criminal background.
"So it's going to help us work more closely with the Crown Prosecution Service to ensure that people that have been convicted and sentenced and are behind bars don't face charges," she said.
"And obviously, all our partners, including the Crown Prosecution Service, are trying to understand the problem better and how they will get as much justice as possible for people that have been convicted."
The majority of prisoners in these prisons have prior convictions for violent offences, including violence against prison staff.
A recent report into public order in prisons found prison facilities were overcrowded, poor in medical and dental facilities, and in general, dangerous.
Det Supt Badden said his force was taking a proactive approach to tackle any risk from the spread of crime to its jails.
He added: "We want to ensure the justice system as a whole is the best it can be, and we want to ensure people are given the opportunity to go to trial, and they have to fight back to the end."
The force has previously suggested closing five jails to avoid a crisis and is continuing to consider the move.
Det Supt Badden said they had identified a number of alternative sites.
"We have some different ways in which we could fit them in there, but we have a range of different ways," he said.
"Some of the options that are considered to be possible is to have those three-month minimum-security prisons at capacity, one or two weeks of intermediate jails that people would need to have their case dealt with in due time."
He said this might mean the closure of the north-west London jail at the same time as the west-west jail at East St Mary's prison on the Thames.

Barnett stands by johnson and has no idea what happened to the other players. He said he was in disbelief because of where he stood during the proceedings, but that's not what made him mad.
"I would have been mad too," said Bennett. "If I was a player or I was even close to it, I know that there were others like me that were not punished, that went on and played."
He said he has no doubt the case was wrong.
"If the system is right in that regard, then you're just not seeing all of the people that are supposed to be involved in these cases," said Bennett.
Johnson will not have to wait longer to try to get compensation from the school. |
